Mari was Hiroto's ex-wife. They had known each other since high school, and Mari became a lawyer after joking that it was the only job she could use her very loud voice in. At the time of her murder, Hiroto and Mari had been divorced for five years; she initiated the divorce, feeling that Hiroto was not supporting her career enough. She used to work in a law firm specializing in divorce counseling, which employed only divorced women.


Minami perceives Mari's final thoughts as memories of making love with Hiroto; as Minami and Hiroto spend more time together during the investigation, Minami becomes confused if they are her feelings or his own. Even five years after the divorce, Mari kept a photo of herself and Hiroto as high school students in her purse, as a reminder of a beautiful memory.

Mari was murdered by the ex-husband of her colleague, Makoto, after Mari promised to talk him out of stalking Makoto.
