Bicycle Thief

Appears in Hakoniwa no Toriko (The Prisoner in the Miniature Garden). He has been living as a recluse and stealing bicycle seats for ten years, ever since he failed his high school entrance exam. He has a low opinion of himself and feels out of place in a family of overachievers. At first he refuses to entertain Nao's requests, but, slowly, he begins to come out of his shell and enjoy spending time with her.


Nao gives him a letter on her birthday, asking him to read it the following morning. In it, she confesses to having had plans to commit suicide together with her family, and to having despised him for stealing the seats of her bicycle. Her acts of kindness and apparent interest in him are, likewise, stated to have been performed with the goal of having him remember her while suffering the pain of loss. However, when she is left in a coma and he goes to the hospital to get revenge, he notices that she is wearing the necklace he had given her.


In the extra at the end of the volume, he is shown bringing her the usual sunflower, with her waiting for him at the window of her hospital room, smiling.
