Mokuzu Umino

About

Mokuzu is a beautiful but strange transfer student from Tokyo who claims to be a mermaid. She is the daughter of Umino Masachika, a famous singer. The literal translation of her name is "scraps of seaweed from the sea."


Umino displays some telltale signs of abuse, including a limp and bruises high up on her legs, not to mention her extremely unusual and erratic behaviour which proves off-putting for her classmates. Throughout the course of the story, it is revealed that she is suffering severe abuse at the hands of her own father. Heartbreakingly, Umino is killed by her father before she has the chance to run away with Nagisa. According to her father, Umino 'became sea foam'. Her death is confirmed when Nagisa finds her body on Ninayama.
