Kotarou is the protagonist of Rewrite. He is a high school student with a frivolous personality and is known to be arrogant. Though not fully realizing it himself, he meddles in the business of others, and as such tends to get easily drawn into incidents. The beginning of Rewrite centers around Kotarou's antics in his attempt to revive his school's Occult Club.

As the story progresses and gets more serious, Kotarou undergoes great changes. Depending on which path he chooses and heroine he allies with, he becomes a whole different person with a different goal and mindset.


He has the ability to "rewrite" his own body and irreversibly change it on a physiological level at the cost of his own lifespan.


Kotarou is much older than he appears. Before the events of the first season, he was a troubled metahuman who did not fit in at school due to his abilities, and resented his parents because they were trying to indoctrinate him into a genocidal cult. Owing to this, he had a very antisocial and cruel personality, often secretly killing low level monsters for kicks until he was recruited by a mercenary group known as Guardian. Events following a mission from Guardian resulted in him being left an a coma for years, only to wake up with amnesia shortly before the first season.
