Naomi first meets Jack as an immigration inspector. He tries to tell her to turn back and go home, but Naomi ignores him. He always shows up wherever she happens to travel, and ends up joining her in the search for her parents. Mingo accuses Jack of being in love with Naomi, but Jack insists he has other reasons for going west.
